These agents are generally categorized into phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors and calcium channel blockers, with their primary use being on the ED treatment of the penis. Currently, phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors are primarily used for the treatment of ED due to their ability to enhance the vasodilation of the corpus cavernosum. As such, they can be a useful option for men suffering from ED and have been demonstrated to be useful in improving erectile function.
In recent years, the development of new phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE-5) has been rapidly expanding. This is a group of drugs that belong to the class of PDE inhibitors, which include sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil (Levitra), avanafil (Stendra), and avanafil-containing phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE-5i). The main indications for PDE-5 inhibitors include the treatment of ED and the treatment of the following conditions:
PDE-5 inhibitors are effective in both the treatment of ED and the treatment of the following conditions:
PDE-5i is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. It has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of ED due to its ability to improve erectile function and also for pulmonary hypertension and coronary artery disease. The mechanism of action of PDE5i in ED treatment is that it enhances the blood flow to the penis, which leads to an erection.
